One of the challenging tasks for Sunday school teachers is finding an easy song to teach the books of the Old Testament.
Children love to sing and teaching information through song is a very useful and fun memory technique. You probably remember a few alphabet or counting songs yourself from when you were a child.
I found a great video on YouTube in which Steve Singleton, a bible teacher, uses the tune from the song “The More We Get Together” to help children remember the books of the Old Testament.
Easy Song to Teach the Books of the Old Testament
What I particularly liked about this song that made it different from others that I found on YouTube had to do with the way Steve Singleton “chunked” the information into categories. He made it really easy for the students to learn the number and names of the books in each section.
Chunking is a great memory technique for learning anything. Think about how you memorize a new telephone number (if you don’t have a smart phone that you can pre-program). For the 10 digit North American phone numbers, it’s easier to learn them in groupings rather than as a whole. First we learn the 3-digit area code, then the first 3 digits of the local number, and then finally, the last 4. It creates a pattern and a rhythm (3-3-4) that aids memory and recall .
